Irrigation Leak

Guide

What a Summer Water Bill Spike Really Means

How to tell normal seasonal use from a buried irrigation loss, and what to check first.

Summer bills rise because irrigation runs. The question is whether the rise matches the schedule. A system that uses the same program as last year but costs noticeably more is a system losing water.

Start with the controller: is a zone running longer than programmed, or a rain sensor failed? Then look for surface clues: soggy strips, unusually green lines, water at valve boxes. If none appear, the loss is likely underground.

A pressure-decay check tells you whether the system holds when off. If it does not, the next step is locating the loss, not replacing parts hopefully.
